Bishop Artemije
For centuries, Kosovo has been and remains a sign and benchmark by which the Serbian people and every Serb in particular are known and recognized. Without Kosovo, the Serbian nation would not exist. The Serbian people would lose their national, moral, and spiritual identity. Likewise, Serbia, as a country, is unthinkable without Kosovo. Serbia is a temple, and Kosovo is an altar. Without an altar, the temple loses its purpose and its sense of existence. Serbia is the body, and Kosovo is the heart of that body. If the heart is torn out of the body, what remains is a decaying corpse. Kosovo has ontological and eschatological value for Serbs. Kosovo gives meaning to our entire national history, it creates and justifies it. Because Kosovo is a determination for the "Heavenly Kingdom", for eternal and imperishable evangelical values. The Holy Great Martyr Prince Lazar of Kosovo was the first to make that choice in his own name and in the name of the entire Serbian nation on the eve of the first Battle of Kosovo in 1389. That battle has lasted through the ages and will continue.
